How To Spend an Action-packed Extended Family Getaway in Midland

Planning a getaway to impress the whole family is tricky. Between “are we there yet?” and “but this is for kids,” there’s a lot of room for error in planning a family getaway. Rather than taking turns having fun, why not plan a getaway that defies the ages?

Midland, TX, is the great escape the whole family will love. Block out a long weekend for your entire crew to soak up the splendors of this West Texas oasis. These are our recommendations for an extended family getaway in The Tall City.

Educational and Fun

Marian Blakemore Planetarium
Fredda Turner Durham Children's Museum

While your family could probably spend a whole day on the Museum of the Southwest campus, this is an excellent start to your fun-filled weekend in Midland. The little ones will love the Fredda Turner Durham Children’s Museum, and the whole gang will love sitting back and taking a far-out look under the stars at the Marian Blakemore Planetarium (Sunday admission is free!). The adults will surely enjoy perusing the Lissa Noel Wagner Wing art exhibits and the Historic Turner Mansion.

The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum is a must for all ages when in Midland. Journey over 230 million years of history through interactive exhibits and petroleum-centered memorabilia. This iconically West Texas museum is a fun way to learn how energy impacts all of us!

Get Out There

Sibley Nature Center
Sibley Nature Center

Whether the family prefers posting up in the Wildlife Viewing Area or taking to the trials, Sibley Nature Center is the place for the whole family to take in the sights and sounds of the West Texan landscape. With 49 acres of land to cover, Sibley Nature Center is your opportunity to immerse the family in the region’s flora, fauna, and natural history.

Centennial ParkCentennial Park

For a more urban sprawl, make sure you plan to bring the family down to Centennial Park in downtown Midland. This urban recreational gathering place in the heart of the city plays host to movie nights, yoga classes, a splash pad, and calm evening walks. To burn off some energy, check out Chris Davidson Opportunity Park, next to Bush Tennis Center. The playground is extraordinary and accessible to all.

Game On!

Midland Rockhounds

When in Midland, cheer on the Midland Rockhounds baseball team. Catch a game at Momentum Bank Ballpark and soak up the full baseball game experience with classic stadium concessions and fanfare. The Rockhounds season begins in April and goes through September. If your family prefers to partake in friendly competition first-hand, book a tee time at Green Acres Mini Golf. This classic Midland landmark hosts much more than its blast-from-the-past mini golf course. Make an evening of it with arcade games, lifesized chess, a playground, snowcones, food trucks, and more classic family fun.
