23 Can’t-Miss Events in 2023

Whether you’re a local or planning a visit to Midland, you are sure to find something exciting to add to your schedule. Our calendar of events has something for everyone, whether it’s a niche interest or something all can enjoy. In true Midland spirit, we welcome you to join us at our favorite events in the Permian Basin.

1. West Texas Hunting Extravaganza | January

West Texas Safari Club International’s Annual West Texas Hunting Extravaganza will host over 60 Exhibitors representing hunting opportunities and destinations from all over the world. Join like-minded hunting aficionados at the Midland County Horseshoe Pavilion!

2. Permian Basin Comic Con X | March

Permian Basin Comic ConThe Midland County Horseshoe Arena is once again hosting the Permian Basin Comic Con X. Shop memorabilia in the expansive vendor hall, meet celebrities from your favorite shows, get your questions answered during celebrity panels, and see (or show off) fantastic cosplay.

3. Opening Night at the Ballpark | April

Playball! The Midland Rockhounds’ opening night kicks off the season at Momentum Bank Ballpark with can’t-miss fanfare. Keep an eye on the home game schedule for fan-favorite events like Thirsty Thursday, Post-game fireworks, First Responder’s Night, and more. 

4. Celebration of the Arts | May

Celebration of the Arts (COA), organized by the Arts Council of Midland, is the longest-running downtown event in Midland! Stop by the festival to see local entertainers and performers, non-profit organizations, family-friendly activities, and special events throughout the weekend. Celebrate the artists and artisans of West Texas at this locally-loved event.

5. Cinco de Mayo Cultural Celebration | May

Celebrate Hispanic culture at the annual Cinco de Mayo Cultural Celebration. Hosted by the Hispanic Cultural Center, this is a great family-friendly event with Mariachi music, great food, dancing, games, and festivities!

6. Mex-Tex Family Fiesta | June

This 30+ year event is the Permian Basin’s largest celebration of culture. Stop by the Mex-Tex Family Fiesta for fabulous Hispanic food options and showcases of music, dance, and art.

7. Summer Sunday Lawn Concerts | June-August 

Pack a picnic and grab some greenspace on the lawn of the Museum of the Southwest for a Summer Sunday Lawn Concert. Sit back and enjoy the best local jazz, pop, country, and folk music scene!

8. Star Spangled Salute | July

Located in Centennial Park, the Midland Chamber of Commerce is host to the annual Star-Spangled Salute. Join in on the spirit of patriotism in downtown Midland with live performances, kid’s fun, food, and fireworks.

9. Midland County Fair | August

Come on down to the 85th annual Midland County Fair! There’s something for everyone on the Midway, including rides, carnival food, games, and prizes.

10. High Sky Wing CAF Airshow | September

Bring the family to see this dazzling aircraft display in the Midland sky. Hosted at the Midland International Air & Space Port, this is your chance to see vintage military aircraft take to the sky.

11. SeptemberFest | September

Explore makers of many mediums, including blown glass, jewelry, oil paintings, and ceramics. This outdoor art market and family fun event is located on the front lawn of the historic Turner Mansion. Find your next favorite unique piece of art at SeptemberFest.

12. Tall City Blues Fest | September

Tall City Blues Fest

Tall City Blues Fest is an original American music festival hosted at the Old Lumberyard at The Destination Midland. This signature Midland event attracts thousands and showcases award-winning blues musicians. 

13. St. Ann’s Family Fair | September

This free carnival event is packed with fun and entertainment for all ages. Stroll through more than 65 food and game booths and make memories with the family.

14. Summer Mummers | September

Join the mayhem and hilarity of a melodrama at the historic Yucca Theater! Summer Mummers is the oldest continuous melodrama in the United States and an unforgettable theater experience.

15. Bands of America Championships | September

Bands of America

The Bands of America Championships is the premiere high school marching band event in the United States. See the culmination of the hard work and training leading up to performances from the finest high school marching bands in America.

16. Fiddlesticks Farms Cornfield Maze & Pumpkin Patch | October-November

There’s no better place for family fun than Fiddlesticks Farms. Explore 7 acres of cornfield maze and 10 acres of pumpkin patch! Pair this with classic fall treats around a bonfire, and you’re guaranteed to make family memories.

17. Midland Southwest Impressionist Art Show & Sale | October

Every Fall, The Haley Library Annual Southwest Impressionist Art Show hosts a fundraiser with works from the highly sought-after Midland Southwest Impressionists. Proceeds go to The Haley Library. Join the collectors that flock to view and purchase exquisite fine art from the Texas area.

18. Fall Gathering Ranch Storytelling | October

Gather ‘round for The Fall Gathering Ranch Storytelling at The Haley Library. Stop by to hear stories straight from the ranch and recognize those that have exhibited remarkable ability in the field. 

19. Gem & Mineral Show | November

Midland’s annual Gem & Mineral Show is your chance to see unbelievable natural oddities. See geodes cut on-site, fossils, minerals, beads, handmade jewelry, vendors, and fun for the kids!

20. Midland Storytelling Festival | December

At this event, hear tales from Master Storytellers, attend workshops, and soak in so many stories! This annual event is fun for anyone who loves a good story.

21. Christmas at the Mansion | December

Christmas at the historic Turner Mansion is packed with a calendar of festive holiday events. Join in on their holiday lunch, tea, or the open house event. There are also visits from Santa himself and the annual ReinBeer event! There is a holiday event for everyone at the mansion.

22. City of Midland Christmas Parade | December

Santa is coming to downtown Midland! Await ‘the man with the bag’ and much more at the Midland Santa Parade.

23. The Nutcracker Ballet | December

DTN - STL - Midland Festival Ballet - Nutcracker Auditions

Get into the Christmas spirit with the iconic Nutcracker Ballet. Presented by Midland Festival Ballet, the Nutcracker features world-class soloists, talented dancers, and music by the Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale.
