The governing body of each of Texas' 254 counties is the commissioners' court. In Texas, each court is made up of five members: the county judge and four commissioners. Before taking office, a county commissioner must take the official oath and be sworn in. A commissioner must be bondable of $3,000 and successfully complete 16 hours of continuing education hours each calendar year. A county commissioner would be the equivalent of a VP position in other organizations and business. They are responsible for the following items:

  • Adopting the county's budget and tax rate
  • Approves all budgeted purchases of the county
  • Fills vacancies in elective and appointive offices
  • Sets all salaries and benefits
  • Has exclusive authority of contracts
  • Provides and maintains all county buildings and facilities
  • Oversee and approve projects regarding roads and bridges within the county
